Bloomingdale's: "Wonka"
Bergdorf Goodman: "Isn't It Brilliant?"
Macy's: "Give Love"
Saks Fifth Avenue: "Carousel of Dreams" by Christian Dior
Dior did for Saks what it did for the Brooklyn Museum two years ago: gave it a badly needed face-lift, in exchange for complete branding submission. But the artistry really is incredible if you can get past the commercialization.
What I found most fascinating--and charming--is the iconicization of a middle-aged French designer who died more than 50 years ago. Tiny Dior figures populate the installation performing a variety of tasks.
Smartly, the window designers pay homage to New York City.
Notice the association of the NYPD with a Dior fragrance ("Sauvage is an act of creation inspired by wide-open spaces. A composition marked by a raw freshness, powerful and noble all at once"). Abner Louima might have a different take.
How's this for meta? It's a recreation of the current Saks storefront, complete with the extraordinary light show.
